Synopsis

A comedy set on the Mississippi Gulf Coast at “Serenity Manor,” a grand Greek Revival mansion. Irene Dubonnet, the aging matriarch, is dying, and her son Rooster, a failing artist, schemes with his brother-in-law Quint to seize control of the family estate. As relatives converge hoping to inherit, the façade of Southern gentility crumbles, revealing the desperate games families play for love, money, and recognition.

Setting: The gallery of “Serenity,” a Greek Revival mansion on the Gulf of Mexico, Pass Christian, Mississippi. July 4th weekend, contemporary.

Performance History: Published by Zoe Productions, Seattle Playwrights Unit as one of the top plays in the U.S. for 1993. Performed at Southern Rep, June 1993, and at the International Conference on Theatre and Politics, American Center, Sorbonne University, Paris, November 1993. Workshop production at the Actors' Centre, London, October 1994.
